The Mineharts owned a Boston terrier named Heidi. Boston Terriers were the most popular dog breed in the country at the time partly because so many people left their farms and moved into cities. They are compact dogs which could live in a house in a city and small enough to ride in a car. They have boxy bodies and faces. The Mineharts dog, Heidi, liked to sleep behind the kitchen stove. In those days people didn't let pets sleep in bed with them. People might catch fleas if they did. Heid learned her name, so the children's mother, Winifred, would spell the word dog out. Soon if anyone said D-O-G, the dog would cock her head and listen carefully.
