Our English ancestors who passed through Ireland before coming to America before the revolutionary war were Protestant. I am glad they didn’t stay. Too much unnecessary and violent conflict caused by perceived differences. And colonization.
My aunt (who is 102) tells me that when she and the members of her large Irish-Catholic family walked down the street in their tiny town of Norwood, NY, non-Catholics would cross the street. That was in the dirty 30s and 40s. In fact, the only reason she was able to secure a teaching job - was because she taught business - a highly sought after difficult position to fill.
I was raised Catholic courtesy of Croatian ancestry.

Thank you for sharing. My mom was oblivious and until this incident.
